Australia entered the four-match Test sequence in opposition to India decided to make it “as hard as possible” for Cheteshwar Pujara to attain, the home workforce’s tempo spearhead Pat Cummins stated after his terrific show within the third Test on Saturday.

Pujara has been criticised for his ultra-defensive strategy within the sequence to this point and as a substitute of propping up his workforce’s response to Australia’s first innings complete of 338 all out, his painstakingly gradual 50 off 176 balls on the third day of the third Test right here derailed India’s momentum.

“Today I got a bit of assistance from the pitch. But he (Pujara) is someone you know you are going to have to bowl a lot at,” Cummins stated in the course of the digital post-day press convention.

The world’s primary bowler returned wonderful figures of 4/29 and dismissed Pujara, who had been a thorn in Australia’s flesh in the course of the 2018-19 sequence, for the fourth time within the ongoing rubber.

“We got our head around that this series, for him to score runs, we are going to make it as hard as possible, and whether he bats for 200-300 balls, we would just try and bowl good ball after good ball, challenge both sides of his bat, and fortunately, so far it has worked.”

Cummins was requested about Pujara’s gradual scoring fee and the stress it places on different batsmen. “It’s one of those things. You know he (Pujara) is going to hang around. As long as you are controlling the scoreboard. At one stage he had been out there for 200 balls or 150 balls and I looked up there thinking they are still 200 away from our first-innings total.

“So, that fell a good distance away and if we proceed bowling nicely, you are not overly bothered.”

“I feel having Greeny (Chris Green) in there as a bowling choice as nicely helps so we’re not having these large 20-over days,” he said.

After posting 338 in their first innings, Australia bowled out the visitors for 244 to take a substantial 94-run lead.

By stumps on the third day, the hosts had extended the lead to 197 runs by reaching 103 for two.

According to Cummins, his team is in a great position but he expects India to bounce back.

“I feel, firstly of the day, I used to be sort of hoping that we would not finish the day nonetheless having to bowl, so to be having 200 lead with eight wickets in hand on a wicket that’s deteriorating fairly shortly, nice end result,” the 27-year-old added.

“I feel they’re a superb aspect, I’m certain they’ll bounce again however by way of getting the bowlers again on the market for one more day, they’ve now bowled for 3 days in a row, these sorts of issues do add up,” he added.

Cummins said the host would look to take the lead beyond 300 runs at least.

“The large factor is to maintain that lead stand up over 300-odd and hopefully the wicket retains deteriorating and make {that a} actually robust complete to attain on day 4 and 5,” he added.

For India, both Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja were sent for scans after taking nasty blows while batting.

Asked if that gives Australia a mental edge, Cummins said, “We would wait and see, who is aware of. Don’t know whether or not Jadeja goes to come back out and bowl, Rishabh being right away changed with (Wriddhiman) Saha, so we are going to see.”

Australia was exceptional in the field as they effected three run-outs in India’s first innings and Cummins was all praise for his teammates.

“It does not occur fairly often. I assumed each Josh’s (Hazlewood) and Marnus’ (Labuschagne) direct hit run outs, particularly getting a top-order batter like (Hanuma) Vihari got here seemingly out of nowhere.

“The fielding at the MCG was spoken about a lot. And in between Tests we did quite a lot of work on it. Not only the run-outs, I thought the attitude in the field was fantastic, really good team effort today,” he added.

On his personal efficiency, Cummins stated it was proper up there along with his greatest efforts.

“I’d say it’s right up there. Rhythm feels really good. I would say I have got pretty good control on not only where the ball is landing but I guess the seam movement as well. Hopefully it continues.

“No doubt having come into this sequence fairly contemporary as nicely, not having performed Tests because the finish of final summer time, that is an enormous assist and even three-Test legs nonetheless really feel actually contemporary, so do not low cost that both,” he signed off.
